SITHOLE LOSES TO DYLAN ALCOTT IN SYDNEY OPEN SEMIS

South African top wheelchair tennis quad ace Lucas Sithole has been knocked out of the Sydney Open by defending champion and tournament favourite Dylan Alcott, missing out on a place in the final against long-term rival American David Wagner in Sydney, Australia.

The former world number 1 Alcott easily recorded his fourteenth successive victory over Sithole to reach the final of the first International Tennis Federation (ITF) Super Series event of the year and proved a deserved winner, triumphing in straights sets 6-1 6-2.

Sithole had earlier on Thursday staged a masterclass performance and raced into the last four by thrashing Japanese Shota Kawano 6-2 6-3 but the Australian ended his winning streak and a chance of a first singles title in Sydney.

Sithole, the world number 4 was outclassed by Brit’s Andy Lapthorne in a hard-fought three sets 7-5 5-7 6-1 in the semi-final round in the 2016 event and was hoping to reach the final this year.

“Dylan Alcott is a good player, he plays best in the big matches, I knew this wasn’t going to be an easy match. I made lot of mistakes and didn’t capitalize on my opportunities but I hope for a better performance here in Sydney next year,” said Sithole.

The world number two Alcott, who beat Lapthorne in the 2017 final, plays world number 1 American David Wagner in Saturday's showpiece at Black Town Tennis Centre Stanhope in Sydney.

Sithole, Montjane and Maripa will now move to Melbourne for the ITF level 1 event starting January 16 to 20.
