South African top wheelchair tennis junior Alwande Skhosana walked away with LSEN School Male Athlete of the Year award at the sixth edition of the Gauteng Schools Sport Awards held at Birchwood Hotel & OR Tambo Conference Centre in Boksburg last Friday.

The event saw winners in different categories being recognized for their excellence in schools sport during 2017. Awards were presented to the young athletes, school teams, coaches, officials and schools that excelled in the past year.

The 17-year-old Skhosana who’s doing Grade 12 at Adelaide Tambo Special School in Soweto says the award has inspired him to work harder in future and win more awards, “I am very excited for winning my first provincial school sport award this year. This award has inspired me to do more, to represent my school, district, province and my country,” commented Skhosana.

“Unfortunately, I won’t be playing much tennis this year due to my hectic Matric schedule but next year I will be back with a bang and hopefully scoop more awards.”

Skhosana earlier this year represented the country at the prestigious Cruyff Foundation Junior Masters in Tarbes, France where he impressed, claiming the third-place spot behind world number 2 Conner Stroud from the United States.

Gauteng MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, Faith Mazibuko congratulated all the winners for making the province so proud and affirming Gauteng as the ‘Home of champions’.

Wheelchair Tennis South Africa’s Manager Karen Losch congratulated Skhosana, “Alwande is the next big star in wheelchair tennis! We congratulate him on his incredible achievement, and well-earned success. Skhosana has always been a brilliant player. He took up the sport in 2012 and in less than 5 years he showed signs of a champion breaking into the top 5 globally, so this is not a big surprise for us,” the proud Manager said.
