WESTERN CAPE CROWNED NETCARE INTER-PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONSHIPS WINNERS

Western Cape Province were crowned champions as the 2018 Inter-Provincial Wheelchair Tennis Championships came to a thrilling conclusion on Sunday at Arthur Ashe Tennis Centre in Jabavu, Soweto.

The team which comprised of Benito Vuma, Mayenzeke Gwija, Siyabulela Mahlikihla and Zenani Mnceti staged sterling performances and wrote their names amongst the tennis greats of South Africa at the weekend following their victory defeating Gauteng West in a clean-sweep 3-0 to lift gold at the Netcare sponsored event.

Gauteng West’s wheelchair tennis team of Nicholas Otto, Stenley Dlamini, Sibonelo Qwabe and Siya Ndumo took home the silver medal meanwhile Limpopo Central clinched third place following a 2-1 win over Gauteng North in the 3/4 position play-offs.

The event saw over 50 players making up 14 teams representing all 9 provinces of the country that battled it out in the tournament which was staged for the very first time.

Mirgil Masia from Gauteng North and Limpopo Central’s Luwie Mabelane were named best players of the tournament following their outstanding performances and winning all their matches in the tournament.

Mabelane put his team ahead following a scintillating performance clinching all his singles matches to boost the team to a podium finish.

“It is a real honour to receive such recognition by Wheelchair Tennis South Africa and this will motivate me to keep working hard and playing well,” commented Mabelane who was in disbelieve when presented with the prize.

“This prize is very special to me and is much bigger than just me. I will always cherish it.”

Patrick Selepe, Tournament Director, said: “The teams had the most enjoyable tournament this weekend. They showed total commitment and all the players have gained invaluable experience and have grown as tennis players.”

“Congratulations to all the players who showed remarkable sportsmanship throughout the two days in Soweto.
