MONTJANE DRAWN TO FACE KRUGER IN WIMBLEDON OPENER

South African wild card entry and Wimbledon debutante Kgothatso Montjane will open her campaign at the grass-court tournament against world number 6 Germany’s Katharina Kruger on Thursday when the 2018 Wimbledon wheelchair tennis event gets underway in London.

World number 8 Montjane and the German world number 6 have never met in a Grand Slam tournament before and they will have their first Grand Slam contest at The All England Lawn Tennis Club on Thursday. The last time they played each other was in the 2017 Swiss Open final in Geneva, the match which Montjane won in straight sets 6-2 6-3. Montjane has won 12 of their previous 17 matches in all competition.

“I don’t have pressure at all as I go into the tournament as the underdog and it is also my first time on grass tournament. It’s going to be tricky especially since it’s only the best players in the world who are competing in the event, so I just want to enjoy my time here and stick to my game plan,” commented Montjane who will experience her first match practice on grass today (Wednesday).

Despite her lack of match practice on grass, the 32-year-old Montjane said she was primed for the challenge, “I may not have any experience on grass, but I am a competitor, so I am ready for the challenge and I plan to give it my best as I represent not only South Africa but the African continent.”

If all goes according to plan, the Limpopo-born star Montjane could face either reigning champion Diede de Groot from the Netherlands or world number 4 Germany’s Sabine Ellerbrock in the women’s singles semi-final round.
